What is LABID²?
The Laboratory for Innovation and Digital Rights at the UFBA Faculty of Law (LABID²) is a university outreach initiative dedicated to interdisciplinary research at the frontiers between law, technology and society.
Our Mission
To advance digital inclusion and digital literacy, providing critical and accessible analysis of how new technologies affect civil rights in Brazil.
Ecosystem
Undergraduates research alongside faculty and guest speakers, and take what they produce to public consultations, events and open training sessions.
Looking Ahead
Through our research laboratories, we work to shape a digital future that is ethical and centred on human rights.
Our History
LABID² grew out of a need identified by researchers at the Federal University of Bahia Faculty of Law: a formal space for the cross-cutting study of the relationships between technology, innovation and law. With these subjects absent from traditional undergraduate legal curricula, the laboratory was founded to fill that gap with academic rigour and a commitment to society.
Today the laboratory works on data protection, AI regulation, internet governance and algorithmic racism. It has made submissions to public consultations held by the ANPD, Brazil's National Data Protection Authority, and by the federal government, and runs a reading group, the Journal Club, on the international literature on algorithmic auditing.
In 2025, members of the laboratory took part in the 15th Brazilian Internet Forum, held in Salvador, through the CGI.br Youth Programme. The Forum is the national preparatory event for the UN Internet Governance Forum.
